New York pitcher Mel Stottlemyre became the 1st 20 game winner in the AL by leading the Yankees over the Red Sox 10-8. The victory allowed New York to keep their 1 game lead in the AL Standings.

In a tight game it was the New York Yankees 10, the woeful Boston Red Sox 8 at
Yankee Stadium.
 
Mel Stottlemyre(20-12) pitched well for New York in their victory.  He
surrendered 6 hits and 6 walks in 8 and 2/3 innings.  Boston threatened in
the 9th but New York was able to put down the rally.  
 
Pedro Ramos recorded his 21st save.  Lee Stange(7-9) was charged with the
loss.  He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 7 hits and 2 walks in
3 and 2/3 innings.  
 
'It wasn't my best outing, but I'll take the win' Stottlemyre said.

The league leading New York Yankees have been struggling as of late. However, my Detroit Tigers have also struggled, losing 5 straight games. This has allowed the Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles to really tighten up the AL pennant race. Detroit is headed to Minnesota for a huge 3 game series against the Twins. The Tigers are 7-8 so far this season against the Twins.

A Detroit 9-6 come from behind win over Cleveland and a NY 7-0 shutout loss to Minnesota has resulted in a two way tie in the AL. The Twins and Baltimore Orioles are also still in hot pursuit of the top spot.

 Only the Pittsburgh Pirates have a real shot of catching the league leading Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL as the 1966 heads to the finish line. In the 1st game of a big 3 game series between the two teams in LA two 20 game winners squared off. Dodger ace Sandy Koufax (23-9) ended up with the win and Bob Veale (20-8) took the loss in a 6-5 Dodger victory.
