1966 AL Game: McDowell strikes out 16

Gambo and T_Wil1 Photopack - Page 690 - OOTP Developments ForumsAugust 2, 1966

In a game between 2 teams that have been under-performing all season, Cleveland's Sam McDowell struck out 16 as the Indians defeated the Baltimore Orioles 9-3. McDowell has struggled as much as his team this year, but he gave the hometown fans something to cheer about tonight as the K's kept accumulating.  The 16 strikeouts are the most by any pitcher this season in MLB. Baltimore's Boog Powell was a picture of futility as he struck out 5 times in the game. Cleveland's Fred Whitfield was the offensive star, going 4 for 4 with 4 RBI.

1966 AL Standings

August 1, 1966

The 1966 AL baseball season is set to begin the month of August and the New York Yankees have put a little distance between them and the rest of the league.  New York has exceeded all expectations this season and continue putting games into the win column. The Yankees were 20-12 in July, tops in the AL. They've also won more 1-run games than any other team in MLB this season: 28. My Detroit Tigers are in 2nd place after a decent month of July, 18-13, but still lost ground to the league leaders. The Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins continue to flounder and both teams had sub .500 records in July. The Chicago White Sox have stayed in the hunt due to their top pitching in the league.

1966 NL Standings

August 1, 1966

The Los Angeles Dodgers still hold the top spot in the NL as the season enters the month of August. The Dodgers have been getting it done with superb pitching from their starting quartet of Koufax, Sutton, Drysdale and Osteen. Closer Phil Regan is tops in the NL with 12 saves.. The 2nd place Atlanta Braves have been right on the Dodgers heels, but the Braves have relied on their bats. Torre, Aaron, and Alou lead the Braves attack. Pittsburgh and San Francisco are still in the hunt, while St. Louis has dropped off the pace with a league worst 10-20 record in July.

Jim Wynn had 5 hits and 6 RBI at The Astrodome as the Houston Astros belted
the New York Mets by the count of 18 to 2.

It seemed that New York pitching was serving up softballs for Wynn to hit. He
doubled in the 1st inning, slapped a single which scored a run in the 3rd
inning, doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 4th inning, lined a
one-base hit in the 6th inning and belted a three-run homer in the 7th
inning. Houston provided plenty of action in the 3rd inning which saw them
score 5 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 3
hits. Houston simply wore out the New York pitching staff, scoring in 6
different innings.

Turk Farrell(6-5) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory.
Dennis Ribant(8-4) was the losing pitcher. He was hit hard and gave up 7
hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.

Houston now has a record of 46-51. With this loss, New York has a 4-6 record
of late, 33-64, worst in the league overall.
