1966 AL Game: McDowell strikes out 16

In a game between 2 teams that have been under-performing all season, Cleveland's Sam McDowell struck out 16 as the Indians defeated the Baltimore Orioles 9-3. Sam McDowell dominated striking out 16 Baltimore batters and Fred Whitfield
had 4 hits and 4 RBI at Municipal Stadium where the Cleveland Indians beat
the Baltimore Orioles by the score of 9 to 3.
 
Whitfield enjoyed a fine evening at the plate.  He doubled scoring two
baserunners in the 1st inning, cleared the fences for a two-run home run in
the 3rd inning, laced a base-hit in the 5th inning and doubled in the 7th
inning.  Cleveland totaled 13 hits on the night.  
 
McDowell(7-8) allowed 3 runs on the game. Dave McNally(8-4) took the loss.  He
gave up 7 runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work.  'Everything felt great'
McDowell said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could throw it by everybody
tonight.'
