AL Game: NY at Det

August 16, 1966

The Detroit Tigers are now tied for 1st place in the AL after defeating the NY Yankees 5-3 tonight in hard fought contest. Detroit took a 1-0 lead into the 7th inning before NY scored 3 times. The Tigers added a run in the bottom of the 7th making it 3-2 before their game winning rally in the bottom of the 8th. The big hit came from pinch hitter Gates Brown who doubled in 2 runs with 2 out. Bill Freehan followed Brown's 2 base hit with one of his own, scoring Brown and giving Detroit a 5-3 lead. Dave Wickersham shut down the Yankees in the 9th, giving the Tigers the win and a tie for 1st place.
In other AL news, the Baltimore Orioles won their 12th straight game tonight with a 8-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox and moved within 1.5 games of the league leaders.

Catcher Bill Freehan blasted a homerun and had 2 RBI at Tiger Stadium as the
Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees by the count of 5 to 3.
 
Detroit came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning scoring 3
runs using 3 hits.  After two outs Norm Cash began the rally when he drew a
walk.  Willie Horton followed next and he banged out a single.  Gates Brown
then doubled.  Freehan was up next and he doubled.  Detroit finished with 8
hits in the victory.  
 
Dave Wickersham(8-4) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory.
Steve Hamilton(4-5) was given the loss in relief.  While he was the losing
pitcher, he still struck out 4 batters in 1 and 2/3 innings.
