Detroit Tiger News

August 15, 1966

The 2nd place Detroit Tigers are back home for a very important 9 game home-stand. Up first are the 1st place NY Yankees for a 3 game series. The red-hot Baltimore Orioles are next for 3 games before the home-stand ends with 3 games vs. the Chicago White Sox.
Tonight, the Tigers defeated the Yankees in game 1 of the series 9-5 and moved within 1 game of the league leaders . Detroit took control of the game in the 5th inning by scoring 3 runs off NY starter Mel Stottlemyre. Mickey Lolich pitched a fine game and got the win while striking out 12.

Willie Horton cracked a homer and Mickey Lolich mowed down 12 New York batters
as the Detroit Tigers bested the New York Yankees 9 to 5 at Tiger
Stadium.
 
Lolich(11-7) delivered a fine performance for Detroit.  He went 8 and 1/3
innings allowing 8 hits and 2 walks.  Detroit out-hit New York for the game,
14 hits to 9.  
 
Mel Stottlemyre(15-12) took the loss.  He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits and
6 walks in 6 innings.  Frank Skaff was asked about the performance of Lolich,
'He had his good stuff out there tonight.  The fans really get into it when
the strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more
adrenalin.'
