1966 Final AL Standings and League Leaders

October 3, 1966

The Detroit Tigers are the AL Champions! They came out on top of a tough 4 team battle with New York, Baltimore, and Minnesota. The New York Yankees led the league for much of the season but faltered in the end, finishing 2nd. I've never had a team perform so far above their actual record. The Baltimore Orioles were a streaky team all season. They won 19 in a row at the beginning of August moving back into 1st place, but then followed that with 10 losses in a row. The Minnesota Twins held 1st place most of the time from the middle of May to the middle of June, and were in the race until the end.
Baltimore's Frank Robinson was the big hitting story in MLB this season. He won the Triple Crown in the AL with a .355 BA, 59 HR, and 153 RBI. Detroit's Norm Cash finished 2nd in BA with a .309 mark. He was also 5th in HR with 36 and tied for 2nd in RBI with 117. The Kansas City A's Bert Campaneris led MLB with 85 swipes. There were only 2, 20 game winners in the AL. New York's Mel Stottlemyre won 21 and Minnesota's Jim Katt won 20. Cleveland Indian Steve Hargan posted the league's best ERA: 1.91, and his teammate Sam McDowell was the whiff leader with 235.

1966 Final NL Standings and League Leaders

October 3, 1966

The Los Angeles Dodgers are the 1966 NL Champions. The Dodgers hitting attack was near the bottom of the league, but they rode the finest pitching staff in MLB to the NL title. The Pittsburgh Pirates were the best hitting team in the NL, and while the pitching staff was in the upper half of the league, it wasn't enough. They finished in 2nd place.
The Atlanta Braves also provided many of the top hitters in the league. Felipe Alou won the Batting title with a .344BA. Hank Aaron won the HomeRun Crown by hitting 50, Joe Torre was 4th with 39. Torre was the top RBI man with 130, Aaron 2nd with 125. Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals swiped 72 bases to lead the league. There were 5, 20 game winners led by Sandy Koufax's 24. Koufax also led the league in strikeouts with 318. Houston Astro Mike Cuellar's 1.60 ERA was tops in the NL.

1966 AL News Recap: Standings and League Leaders

Sept. 1, 1966

The Baltimore Orioles Frank Robinson still has a good shot at claiming the Triple Crown this season. Only New York's Mickey Mantle and his .341 BA stand in his way, but Mantle's injury plagued season may leave him short of the qualified at bats needed by seasons end. Pitching has been a mixed bag this season with no pitcher really dominating the league.

1966 AL Standings and League Leaders at the All-Star Break

July, 11, 1966

The Baltimore Oriole's Frank Robinson is making a push for the Triple Crown with an amazing season, but it is the play of New York's Mickey Mantle, Tom Tresh, and Joe Pepitone that have surprised many and propelled the Yankees to the top spot in the AL. After a slow start this year, the ailing Mantle has been red hot the last 2 months and leads the league in BA with a .363 mark and is 5th with 22 HR. Boog Powell has teamed with Robinson to help lead the Orioles to their winning record in the league.

1966 AL News Recap; Standings and League Leaders

May 1, 1966

The month of April is in the record books for the 1966 AL season. Detroit Tigers Norm Cash and Al Kaline are both off to good starts and find themselves in the top 6 for HR and RBI. They same can be said for the Baltimore Orioles Frank Robinson and Boog Powell. Robinson, who was obtained from the NL Cincinnati Reds before the start of the season, is expected to push the Orioles to the top this year and he's been delivering so far. Kansas City's Bert Campaneris leads the AL in BA with a .436 mark. While there have been many good pitching performances so far this year, there isn't any 1 pitcher standing out above all others.
