Pittsburgh Pirate Roberto Clemente had a fine day at the plate against the Philadelphia Phillies. Clemente went 5 for 5 with 6 RBI. Two of his hits were homers and he only lacked a double from hitting for the cycle. Pittsburgh won the contest 11-10.

Roberto Clemente rocketed 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 11 to 10 at Connie Mack
Stadium.
 
Clemente was a source of great heartache for the Philadelphia faithful all
evening.  He just kept pounding out hits! He ripped a base-hit scoring a run
in the 1st inning, slapped a single in the 3rd inning, tripled in the 5th
inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 7th inning and launched a three-run
homer in the 8th inning.  Philadelphia had a chance in the 9th but they came
up short.  
 
Steve Blass(7-8) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 innings. Blass
was helped out by Roy Face who recorded his 9th save.  Terry Fox(3-6) was the
loser in relief.  His ERA increased from 5.96 to 6.39 as he allowed 3 runs in
1 inning.

San Francisco Giant pitcher Bobby Bolin threw a no-hitter today against the Houston Astros. The Giants won the game by a score of 4-0. The win was Bolin's 17th of the season.

Bobby Bolin(17-7) thrilled the fans at The Astrodome as he crafted a no-hit
masterpiece against the Houston Astros.  The San Francisco Giants won by a
final score of 4 to 0.
 
Bolin was obviously at the top of his game as he set the Houston batters down
like so many dominoes.  He walked just one Houston batter.  The tension
started to build around the 6th inning.  By the 9th inning the crowd was
electrified.  San Francisco had only 4 hits for the game.  
 
Larry Dierker(10-12) absorbed the loss.  He surrendered 4 hits and 5 walks in
7 and 1/3 innings.  It took a while to pry Bolin way from his teammates as
they all wanted to show their appreciation and joy.  Finally, however, Herman
Franks got to offer his own congratulations with a big bear hug and the
comment, 'That was one of the best pitched games I have seen in all my years
in baseball - Bolin was masterful out there this afternoon!'

Sandy Koufax became the 1st 20 game winner in MLB this season. Koufax whiffed

12 batters as the phenomenal Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals by a score of 1 to 0. Koufax(20-7) was simply too much for the St. Louis batters. He was stingy on the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. Los Angeles had 10 hits for the afternoon. Ray Washburn(6-11) was tagged with the loss. Koufax was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on. The fans really got into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can only do that again in my next outing.'

Jim Wynn had 5 hits and 6 RBI at The Astrodome as the Houston Astros belted
the New York Mets by the count of 18 to 2.
 
It seemed that New York pitching was serving up softballs for Wynn to hit.  He
doubled in the 1st inning, slapped a single which scored a run in the 3rd
inning, doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 4th inning, lined a
one-base hit in the 6th inning and belted a three-run homer in the 7th
inning.  Houston provided plenty of action in the 3rd inning which saw them
score 5 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 3
hits.  Houston simply wore out the New York pitching staff, scoring in 6
different innings.  
 
Turk Farrell(6-5) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory.
Dennis Ribant(8-4) was the losing pitcher.  He was hit hard and gave up 7
hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.  
 
Houston now has a record of 46-51.  With this loss, New York has a 4-6 record
of late, 33-64, worst in the league overall.

1966 NL Game: Chicago at St. Louis

Chicago Cub outfielder Byron Browne had a big day at the plate today. Browne blasted 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI, leading the Cubs to an 8-7 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Browne totaled 4 hits in the game.

Byron Browne smashed 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the Chicago Cubs defeated the

Browne enjoyed a big day at the plate.  He lost the ball over the fence for
three runs in the 1st inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence in the
3rd inning, delivered a one-base hit in the 5th inning and cleared the fences
for a two-run home run in the 7th inning.  St. Louis made it exciting in the
9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.  
 
Ken Holtzman(6-3) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 6 runs. Billy Hoeft recorded the save, his 3rd.  The loss was
charged to Art Mahaffey(0-4).  He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 6 and 1/3
innings of work.  
 
With the win Chicago now has a record of 38-50.  With the loss, St. Louis has a
record of 5-5 lately, 49-39 overall.

1966 NL Game: Pit. vs Phil. 15 K's

June 24, 1966

Philadelphia ace Jim Bunning reeled off 15 strikeouts while shutting out the Pittsburg Pirates tonight at Connie Mack Stadium.  The Phillie batters were able to get to Pirates ace Bob Veale for 5 runs and won the game 7-0. The 15 K's are the most by any pitcher in MLB this season.

9 innings improving his ERA from 3.45 to 3.22.  Philadelphia finished with 10
hits in the victory.  
 
Bob Veale(12-4) was hit with the loss.  When asked about his strikeout total
for the game, Bunning offered, 'The fan's really got into it.  It is fun to
see them tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands.  Fortunately,
I kept them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the
'W'.'

The Pittsburgh Pirates Bill Mazeroski had a big day at the plate today launching 2 HR and driving in 8 runs, allowing the Pirates to crush the New York Mets 17-7. The 8 RBI by Maz are the most in any game by an individual player this year in the NL. Teammate Willie Stargell added a HR, and 2 RBI among his 3 hits that raised his BA to .408.

Bill Mazeroski launched 2 homeruns as the Pittsburgh Pirates ballclub
embarrassed the slumping New York Mets by the count of 17 to 7.
 
Mazeroski was really in 'the zone'.  He caught a hold of a bad pitch for a
Grand Slam homerun in the 5th inning, tripled bringing home two baserunners
in the 6th inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 8th inning.  Pittsburgh
bats were very productive in the 5th inning which saw them plate 8 runs on 7
hits.  Pittsburgh out-hit New York for the game, 19 hits to 11.  
 
Don Cardwell(4-3) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. Pete
Mikkelsen recorded the save, his 6th.  Dennis Ribant(1-1) was tagged with the
loss.  He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.
 
Mazeroski said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate
tonight.  You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can.  A couple
pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'

In a game between the 1st place Pittsburgh Pirates and the 3rd place San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park, Willie McCovey flexed his muscles and led the Giants to an 8-6 come from behind victory. McCovey had a big day at the plate getting 3 hits, 2 HR, and 7 RBI. His 2nd HR of the game in the bottom of the 9th, a GrandSlam HR, was the game winning hit.

Gibbon and McCovey were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As Herman Franks noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' The Houston Astros prevailed in a slugfest at The Astrodome tonight, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 12-11. Astro cf Jimmy Wynn had a big day at the plate stroking 6 hits and getting 5 RBI. He was only lacking a triple to complete the cycle. The lead changed hands 7 times before Houston pulled out the game with a 9th inning rally. The Astros had 22 hits in the game and the Phillies added 15.

6 hits.  The critical plate appearance was by Wynn who made the home-town
crowd a happy bunch when he doubled scoring two baserunners.  Houston
provided plenty of action in the 9th inning when they had 4 runs on 6 hits.
This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 7
times.

Culp(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.  He got hit pretty hard, allowing

Gaylord Perry and the San Francisco Giants put an end to the Pittsburgh Pirates 11 game winning streak with a hard fought 1-0 victory tonight. Perry pitched a brilliant game for SF allowing 5 hits, no walks and striking out 8 in getting the complete game shutout win. The Giants got on the scoreboard in the 6th inning on Willie Mays' run RBI single and that was all hard luck losing pitcher Don Schwall would allow.

threatened in the 9th but San Francisco was able to put down the rally.
 
Don Schwall(1-1) was the losing pitcher.  He allowed just 1 run and 5 hits in
8 innings.  Harry Walker lamented, 'Perry was really aggressive tonight.  He
kept coming after our hitters.  Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down
one after another - like so many bowling pins!'

The San Francisco Giants came into Pittsburgh today for the start of a 3 game series against the red-hot 1st place Pirates, hoping to put an end to Pittsburgh's 10 game winning streak. But it was not to be as the Pirates built a 10-4 lead, then held on against a furious 4 run 9th inning Giant rally to win their 11th game in a row by the score of 10-8. Pittsburgh's record now stands at 18-5.

In a tight game it was the streaking Pittsburgh Pirates 10, the San Francisco
Giants 8 at Forbes Field.
 
San Francisco fell behind quickly as the Pittsburgh offense came through in
the first inning scoring 3 runs on 2 hits.  After two outs Roberto Clemente
was the sparkplug when he doubled.  Willie Stargell followed and he was
walked intentionally.  Jim Pagliaroni then rifled a three-run blast.  San
Francisco made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the
needed runs across.  
 
Steve Blass(1-0) got the win allowing 4 runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. Blass got
relief help from Bob Purkey who gained credit for his 1st save.  Bobby
Bolin(3-1) absorbed the loss.  He was knocked around by Pittsburgh, allowing
6 hits and 3 walks in 2 innings.  
 
Pittsburgh added another win to their mounting 11 game winning streak.

May 8, 1966

The 2nd game of my 'let's play two' tribute in honor of Ernie Banks was played last night and it was another extra inning affair. This game 'only' went 11 innings and again, Ernie Banks played a vital role in a Chicago Cubs victory. The Cubs trailed 4-2 entering the 9th when Ernie hit a 2 run homer sending the game to extra innings. Chicago scored 2 runs in the top of the 11th and held on for a 6-4 win.

Third baseman Ron Santo had 4 hits and scored 3 times as the Chicago Cubs
bested the New York Mets in 11 innings 6 to 4 at Shea Stadium.
 
The game was deadlocked at 4 after nine full innings.  Chicago ended up
winning it in the 11th inning.  Billy Williams led off and started the attack
as he lined a base-hit.  Santo came next and he ripped a single.  Byron
Browne then doubled.  One out later, Chris Krug came up and he hit a
sacrifice fly.  Don Kessinger stepped into the box and was walked
intentionally.  Overall Chicago out-hit New York 11 to 7.  
 
Ted Abernathy(2-0) allowed no runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory.
Bill Hepler(0-3) absorbed the loss in relief.  He gave up 3 hits and 1 walk
in 2 and 2/3 innings.

1966 NL Game: Chi. at NY

May 7, 1966

In honor of Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, who passed away yesterday, I decided to 'play two' and manage the Chicago Cubs. Well, the 1st game turned out to be the longest one played this season lasting 17 innings. The Cubs won the game 8-6 on a 2 run double from Ron Santo and Ernie did play a key role in the game. He's gotten off to a slow start in '66 but did hit a HR in the game and threw out a runner at the plate in the 7th inning.

Billy Hoeft(2-0) got the win allowing no runs in 3 innings. Ken Holtzman
recorded his 1st save.  Dave Eilers(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.
He gave up 3 hits and no walks in 2 innings.

The NL leading Pittsburgh Pirates flexed their muscles and banged out 18 hits winning a 15-9 slugfest over the Cincinnati Reds. The ball was flying out of the park, a total of 9 HR were hit in the game. Willie Stargell hit 2 homeruns with 5 RBI and Roberto Clemente added 2 homeruns with 4 RBI leading the Pirates to victory. Worthy of note: Cincinnati's Pete Rose hit 3 HR with 4 RBI in a losing effort.

Willie Stargell knocked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Pittsburgh Pirates
beat the Cincinnati Reds by a score of 15 to 9.
 
Stargell was a source of great heartache for the Cincinnati faithful all
evening.  He just kept pounding out hits! He lofted a three-run 'big-fly' in
the 1st inning, doubled knocking in a run in the 3rd inning, smashed a
bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 5th inning and doubled in the 8th inning.
Pittsburgh provided plenty of action in the 3rd inning which saw them score 4
runs on 4 hits.  Cincinnati scored in 6 different innings, but their shaky
pitching kept them from victory.  
 
The win was credited to Tommie Sisk(3-0) who went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 7
runs. Sammy Ellis(1-1) was hit with the loss.  He was unable to control the
Pittsburgh offense and allowed 7 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.  
 

1966 NL Game: LA at SF

May 3, 1966

Two of the top teams in the NL squared off for the first time this season at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The LA Dodgers had Don Drysdale going for them on the mound while SF had ace Juan Marichal going for them. Neither pitcher would figure in the final decision as LA won a hard fought battle 6-5. Giant 1st baseman Willie McCovey hit 3 homeruns in the losing effort, giving him a league leading total of 13. LA scored 2 unearned runs in the top of the 9th but SF came back with a run in the bottom of the inning and had the bases loaded before Phil Regan came on to put out the fire for the Dodgers. The win was LA's 7th straight.

In a startling finish the seemingly unstoppable Los Angeles Dodgers staged a
comeback then held on to win over the San Francisco Giants by a score of 6 to
5 at Candlestick Park.
 
Los Angeles had the game winning rally in the 9th inning with 2 runs using 3
hits.  Lou Johnson led off and he slapped a base-hit.  Jim Lefebvre was a
strikeout victim, unable to help out.  John Roseboro then laced a one-base
hit, and an error was also committed.  John Kennedy followed next and he
reached on an error.  Ron Perranoski followed, but he was set down on
strikes.  Wes Parker extended the rally and singled.  Despite scoring in 5
separate innings and 3 homeruns from Willie McCovey, San Francisco could not  
get the win.
Perranoski(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Phil Regan
gained credit for his 2nd save.  Lindy McDaniel(0-1) was the loser in relief.
He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run in
the game.  
 
Los Angeles extended their winning streak to 7 games.
