1966 Final AL Standings and League Leaders

October 3, 1966

The Detroit Tigers are the AL Champions! They came out on top of a tough 4 team battle with New York, Baltimore, and Minnesota. The New York Yankees led the league for much of the season but faltered in the end, finishing 2nd. I've never had a team perform so far above their actual record. The Baltimore Orioles were a streaky team all season. They won 19 in a row at the beginning of August moving back into 1st place, but then followed that with 10 losses in a row. The Minnesota Twins held 1st place most of the time from the middle of May to the middle of June, and were in the race until the end.
Baltimore's Frank Robinson was the big hitting story in MLB this season. He won the Triple Crown in the AL with a .355 BA, 59 HR, and 153 RBI. Detroit's Norm Cash finished 2nd in BA with a .309 mark. He was also 5th in HR with 36 and tied for 2nd in RBI with 117. The Kansas City A's Bert Campaneris led MLB with 85 swipes. There were only 2, 20 game winners in the AL. New York's Mel Stottlemyre won 21 and Minnesota's Jim Katt won 20. Cleveland Indian Steve Hargan posted the league's best ERA: 1.91, and his teammate Sam McDowell was the whiff leader with 235.

1966 AL Standings

September 1, 1966

The Baltimore Orioles incredible run in August has catapulted them to the top spot in the AL as the season begins the month of September. The Orioles went 23-5 last month on the strength of a 19 game winning streak, while the New York Yankees went 13-19 and surrendered the league lead for the first time since June 21st. My Detroit Tigers had a decent month in August and are still very much in the pennant race.  The Minnesota Twins are also a team to be reckoned with as the regular season gets nearer to its end.

1966 AL Standings

The AL season has reached the middle of August and the New York Yankees are holding on to 1st place despite faltering a bit this month. My 2nd place Detroit Tigers have moved within 2 games and will be hosting NY in a 3 game series starting tomorrow. The Baltimore Orioles, the hottest team in MLB, have won 10 in a row and are now in 3rd place, just 3.5 games behind the league leaders. Minnesota, Chicago, and Kansas City are all still in the hunt.

1966 AL Standings

August 1, 1966

The 1966 AL baseball season is set to begin the month of August and the New York Yankees have put a little distance between them and the rest of the league.  New York has exceeded all expectations this season and continue putting games into the win column. The Yankees were 20-12 in July, tops in the AL. They've also won more 1-run games than any other team in MLB this season: 28. My Detroit Tigers are in 2nd place after a decent month of July, 18-13, but still lost ground to the league leaders. The Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins continue to flounder and both teams had sub .500 records in July. The Chicago White Sox have stayed in the hunt due to their top pitching in the league.
