The Houston Astros scored a league high 18 runs tonight as they crushed the New York Mets 18-2.  Astro outfielder Jimmy Wynn had a huge night at the plate with 5 hits and 6 RBI.

Jim Wynn had 5 hits and 6 RBI at The Astrodome as the Houston Astros belted
the New York Mets by the count of 18 to 2.
 
It seemed that New York pitching was serving up softballs for Wynn to hit.  He
doubled in the 1st inning, slapped a single which scored a run in the 3rd
inning, doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 4th inning, lined a
one-base hit in the 6th inning and belted a three-run homer in the 7th
inning.  Houston provided plenty of action in the 3rd inning which saw them
score 5 runs on 4 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 3
hits.  Houston simply wore out the New York pitching staff, scoring in 6
different innings.  
 
Turk Farrell(6-5) went 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory.
Dennis Ribant(8-4) was the losing pitcher.  He was hit hard and gave up 7
hits and 2 walks in 2 innings.  
 
Houston now has a record of 46-51.  With this loss, New York has a 4-6 record
of late, 33-64, worst in the league overall.

1966 NL Player Highlight: Sandy Koufax LA

July 23, 1966

LA Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax has been on quite a hot streak lately. He's 3-0 over the last 10 days of the season, but even more impressive is his record over his last 6 starts: Koufax is 6-0 with 3 complete game shutouts and 2 complete 1-run allowed games. The other game was a 4-3 complete game win.  His season record now stands at 15-6  1.78 ERA and he leads the ML's with 201 K's.

While SF's Willie McCovey has been putting up the big power numbers in the NL, Atlanta's Felipe Alou has been the toughest out in MLB so far this season. Alou is hitting .515, tops in the league, and added 17 RBI to lead the Braves to a 10-5 record, good enough for 2nd place in the NL.
