1966 NL Standings at the All-Star break

July 11, 1966

As the NL season pauses for the All-Star break, the Los Angeles Dodgers find themselves in 1st place. The Dodgers swept a 4 game series from the Atlanta Braves right before the break, allowing them to overtake the Braves for the top spot in the league. LA (the top pitching club in the NL) only allowed 8 runs to Atlanta (the top hitting club in the league) in the series. The Pittsburgh Pirates have returned to their winning ways after falling off the pace in June and are 5 games back of the league leader. The San Francisco Giants continued their steady play in July while the St. Louis Cardinals have fallen back a bit. Both teams are still very much in the pennant race.

1966 AL Standings

July 1, 1966

As the 1966 AL season turns to July, the New York Yankees are showing no signs of letting up on their quest for the pennant. The Yankees went 22-7 in June, tops in the AL.  The Baltimore Orioles floundered in June, going 14-19 and are currently in 3rd place, 4.5 GB New York. The Minnesota Twins have been steady all season and look to be a team to be reckoned with. My Detroit Tigers are tied with the Orioles in 3rd place but have trouble on the road and against left handed pitchers. While the Tigers have one of the top offenses in the league, they continue to have one of the worst pitching staffs. The Cleveland Indians are 18 games below their actual record. They went 7-23 in June and look to be completely out of the picture for a run at the pennant. The Chicago White Sox have the best pitching in the AL but their hitting is the worst. If they can start scoring a few more runs, Chicago could become serious contenders. The Kansas City Athletics fell off a bit in June but are still in the hunt.

1966 AL Standings and League leaders

Mickey Mantle, Tom Tresh, and Joe Pepitone have lead the New York Yankees surprising rise to the to the top of the AL as the 1966 season turns to July. Pitcher Mel Stottlemyre is tied with Minnesota's Jim Kaat for most wins (10) in the AL and Pedro Ramos along with Hal Reniff have been brilliant at closing out games for the Yankees. The Baltimore Orioles Frank Robinson continues to lead the league in homers and rbi's while batting .331, 3rd in the AL. He has a shot at the triple crown.

1966 NL Standings

The powerful Atlanta Braves are in 1st place in the NL as the season enters July. The Braves went 23-8 in June and are the top run producers in the league by a large margin. The Pittsburgh Pirates struggled in June and dropped from 1st to 4th place. The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to get the top pitching in the league and their steady play in June has allowed them to keep close on the heels of Atlanta.

The big bats of the Atlanta Braves have continued their assault on NL pitching and Tony Cloninger has won 13 games, tops in the NL. The performance's of Felipe Alou (.381-1st in BA), Hank Aaron (1st in HR with 27 and 3rd in RBI with 66), and Joe Torre (1st in RBI with 75 and 3rd in HR with 24) along with Cloninger, has led the Braves to the top of the NL.

1966 NL Game: Pit. vs Phil. 15 K's

June 24, 1966

Philadelphia ace Jim Bunning reeled off 15 strikeouts while shutting out the Pittsburg Pirates tonight at Connie Mack Stadium.  The Phillie batters were able to get to Pirates ace Bob Veale for 5 runs and won the game 7-0. The 15 K's are the most by any pitcher in MLB this season.

Jim Bunning whiffed 15 batters as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 7 to 0.
 
Bunning(8-8) was virtually untouchable.  He gave up just 5 hits and 3 walks in
9 innings improving his ERA from 3.45 to 3.22.  Philadelphia finished with 10
hits in the victory.  
 
Bob Veale(12-4) was hit with the loss.  When asked about his strikeout total
for the game, Bunning offered, 'The fan's really got into it.  It is fun to
see them tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands.  Fortunately,
I kept them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the
'W'.'
