1966 AL Game of Note: No-hitter

The Trading Card Database - 1966 Dexter Press California Angels ...June 21, 1966

California pitcher Marcelino Lopez threw a no-hitter today against the Minnesota Twins. The Angels needed the gem by Lopez as they won the game by a score of 2-0. The no hitter was the 1st in the AL this season and came against one of the top hitting teams in the league. Only a walk in the 7th inning marred what could have been a perfect game.  Lopez, his team, and the hometown fans celebrated wildly anyway after the final out was recorded.

1966 AL Standings

June 15, 1966

Half way through the month of June finds the battle for the AL pennant in full swing. There are 8 teams well within striking distance of the top spot in the league. The Minnesota Twins are currently in 1st place but even the 8th place California Angels are only 6.5 games behind them. The Kansas City Athletics and New York Yankees continue to surprise everyone with their winning ways while the Cleveland Indians continue to surprise with their losing way. The Indians, a pre-season favorite, are 14 games off their actual record. Baltimore has struggled lately going 2-8 in their last 10 games.
My Detroit Tigers started June off with 6 straight losses, but have since rebounded and find themselves in 6th place, only 2.5 GB the Twins. Detroit traded for Red Sox pitcher Earl Wilson yesterday hoping to improve their pitching staff which is one of the worst in the AL. Their hitting is one of the best in the league so getting better pitching at this point is vital for their pennant hopes.

1966 Detroit Tiger News

Gambo and T_Wil1 Photopack - Page 942 - OOTP Developments ForumsJune 14, 1966

The Detroit Tigers announced today that they have acquired pitcher Earl Wilson from the Boston Red Sox. Detroit traded outfielder Don Demeter for Wilson. Demeter has been a solid contributor this season but the Tigers have an abundance of young outfielders ready to play MLB. Mickey Stanley is one that is expected to rejoin Detroit after being sent down to Triple A earlier this season. The Tigers are hoping that Wilson can fortify their rotation which has been lacking a solid #3 starter. Earl has been having a good year despite being on the cellar dwelling Sox. He's 6-6 with a 4.34 ERA. He'll also add a very good bat to the lineup whenever he starts. He's considered one of the best hitting pitchers in MLB.

June 14, 1966

The Atlanta Braves are red-hot right now, winning 10 in a row and 12-2 so far in June. Hank Aaron, Joe Torre, and Felipe Alou continue to pound opponents pitching and Atlanta is now tied for 1st in the NL. Aaron (.304 22 55) is 1st in HR and 3rd in RBI in the NL. Torre (.314 21 63) is !st in RBI and 3rd in HR. Alou (.398 14 46) is 2nd in BA, 4th in HR and 5th in RBI.

1966 Detroit Tiger News and AL Standings

June 6, 1966

The Detroit Tigers limped back home after a horrible 6 game road trip. The Tigers played two in Minnesota before heading west to California for a 4 game series against the Angels. They lost all 6 games. Pitching and hitting were lacking for the Tigers as they were outscored 37-13 in the 6 games. Detroit has fallen to 7th place, 6 games behind the Baltimore Orioles. Today is a travel day for the Tigers and they'll try to regroup before arriving home for the start of a 9 game home stand. First up against Detroit will be the Boston Red Sox. The cellar dwelling Red Sox are 2-8 recently, so the hopes are that the Tigers can reverse their fortunes.

The Pittsburgh Pirates Bill Mazeroski had a big day at the plate today launching 2 HR and driving in 8 runs, allowing the Pirates to crush the New York Mets 17-7. The 8 RBI by Maz are the most in any game by an individual player this year in the NL. Teammate Willie Stargell added a HR, and 2 RBI among his 3 hits that raised his BA to .408.

Bill Mazeroski launched 2 homeruns as the Pittsburgh Pirates ballclub
embarrassed the slumping New York Mets by the count of 17 to 7.

Mazeroski was really in 'the zone'. He caught a hold of a bad pitch for a
Grand Slam homerun in the 5th inning, tripled bringing home two baserunners
in the 6th inning and cracked a two-run shot in the 8th inning. Pittsburgh
bats were very productive in the 5th inning which saw them plate 8 runs on 7
hits. Pittsburgh out-hit New York for the game, 19 hits to 11.

Don Cardwell(4-3) picked up the victory, allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. Pete
Mikkelsen recorded the save, his 6th. Dennis Ribant(1-1) was tagged with the
loss. He got hit hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Mazeroski said, 'It was just all timing. I had pretty good rhythm at the plate
tonight. You've got to take advantage of mistakes when you can. A couple
pitches were definitely up a little bit - right in my zone.'

1966 AL Standings

June 1, 1966

The Baltimore Orioles are in 1st place in the AL as the 1966 season enters the month of June. The Orioles won 20 games in May, allowing them to take the top spot. The Minnesota Twins won 18 games, second most in the league, and they hold 2nd place. My Detroit Tigers are in 3rd place, 3.5 games behind the league leaders. They had a sub .500 month going 12-13. New York, Kansas City and Chicago all cooled down the last 2 weeks of May but are still very much in the running for the pennant at this early stage of the season. The Cleveland Indians continue to under perform.

Willie McCovey smashed 2 homeruns and had 7 rbi as the San Francisco Giants staged
a dramatic comeback over the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 8 to 6 at Candlestick Park. San Francisco had the winning rally in the bottom of the 9th inning as they scored 4 runs on 3 base hits. The highlight belonged to McCovey who electrified Candlestick Park when he launched a Grand Slam homerun. San Francisco rapped out 10 hits for the afternoon. Joe Gibbon(1-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 1/3 of an inning and allowing no runs. Tommie Sisk(4-1) ended up with the loss in relief. Gibbon and McCovey were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great come from behind victory. As Herman Franks noted, 'A win like this one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
