Perfection was achieved in Chicago as Bruce Howard(4-2) mesmerized the crowd
while retiring every awful Cleveland Indians batter, resulting in a 4 to
nothing victory.

Howard had an evening to remember. Heck, it's one we'll all remember! What a
game at Comiskey Park! The tension built to a fever pitch. After the 8th
inning everybody in the ballpark was anticipating what would happen in the
9th. Neither team managed to score after the 3rd inning.

The loss was charged to Sonny Siebert(5-11). Howard was in a jubilant mood
after the game. 'If I'd known I was going to throw a no hitter I would have
gotten a haircut!' he said, much to the delight of the clubhouse gathering.

1966 AL Detroit Tiger News

July 13, 1966

1954 Topps #65 Bob SWIFT (Tigers) EX/Frank Skaff | Detroit Tigers Encyclopedia presented by Detroit ...The Detroit Tigers announced today that manager Bob Swift(left) was hospitalized during the All Star break for an undertermined illness and coach Frank Skaff(right) will take over as interim manager when the regular season resumes play on Thursday. As many know, Swift took over the manager reins from Chuck Dressen in May after Dressen suffered a heart attack. Food poisoning is suspected to be the cause of Swift's ailment but more tests are being done to confirm the illness. So Detroit will have to deal with their 3rd skipper of the season while fighting for the AL Pennant during the 2nd half of the 1966 season.

1966 MLB All-Star Game

July 12, 1966

The AL scored 2 runs in the 6th inning and held on to defeat the NL 3-2 in the 1966 All-Star Game played at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The AL got a clutch RBI double from Minnesota's Harmon Killebrew and a clutch RBI single from Baltimore's Boog Powell in the 6th. The NL threatened in the 9th when Lou Brock stole 2nd while pinch running and another hometown favorite, Tim McCarver, stepped in to pinch hit with 2 out. The AL manager then brought in Cleveland's Sam McDowell to relieve Denny McLain and McDowell got McCarver on a flyout to center and preserve the win for the AL.

1966 AL Standings at the All-Star Break

July 11, 1966

The New York Yankees are still in 1st place as the AL season breaks for the All-Star Game. They have been a very over-performing team so far in my replay. My Detroit Tigers have had a good first half of July and are tied with the Minnesota Twins for 2nd place, 2.5 GB the Yankees. The Baltimore Orioles have been underperforming but are still very much in the hunt. The Chicago White Sox pitching has kept them in contention, while the Kansas City Athletics and California Angels continue to try to keep pace. Only 7.5 games separate the top 7 teams in the league.

1966 AL Standings and League Leaders at the All-Star Break

July, 11, 1966

The Baltimore Oriole's Frank Robinson is making a push for the Triple Crown with an amazing season, but it is the play of New York's Mickey Mantle, Tom Tresh, and Joe Pepitone that have surprised many and propelled the Yankees to the top spot in the AL. After a slow start this year, the ailing Mantle has been red hot the last 2 months and leads the league in BA with a .363 mark and is 5th with 22 HR. Boog Powell has teamed with Robinson to help lead the Orioles to their winning record in the league.

1966 NL Standings at the All-Star break

July 11, 1966

As the NL season pauses for the All-Star break, the Los Angeles Dodgers find themselves in 1st place. The Dodgers swept a 4 game series from the Atlanta Braves right before the break, allowing them to overtake the Braves for the top spot in the league. LA (the top pitching club in the NL) only allowed 8 runs to Atlanta (the top hitting club in the league) in the series. The Pittsburgh Pirates have returned to their winning ways after falling off the pace in June and are 5 games back of the league leader. The San Francisco Giants continued their steady play in July while the St. Louis Cardinals have fallen back a bit. Both teams are still very much in the pennant race.

1966 AL Standings

July 1, 1966

As the 1966 AL season turns to July, the New York Yankees are showing no signs of letting up on their quest for the pennant. The Yankees went 22-7 in June, tops in the AL.  The Baltimore Orioles floundered in June, going 14-19 and are currently in 3rd place, 4.5 GB New York. The Minnesota Twins have been steady all season and look to be a team to be reckoned with. My Detroit Tigers are tied with the Orioles in 3rd place but have trouble on the road and against left handed pitchers. While the Tigers have one of the top offenses in the league, they continue to have one of the worst pitching staffs. The Cleveland Indians are 18 games below their actual record. They went 7-23 in June and look to be completely out of the picture for a run at the pennant. The Chicago White Sox have the best pitching in the AL but their hitting is the worst. If they can start scoring a few more runs, Chicago could become serious contenders. The Kansas City Athletics fell off a bit in June but are still in the hunt.

Jim Bunning whiffed 15 batters as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the
Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 7 to 0.

Bunning(8-8) was virtually untouchable. He gave up just 5 hits and 3 walks in
9 innings improving his ERA from 3.45 to 3.22. Philadelphia finished with 10
hits in the victory.

Bob Veale(12-4) was hit with the loss. When asked about his strikeout total
for the game, Bunning offered, 'The fan's really got into it. It is fun to
see them tally up the strikeout totals up there in the stands. Fortunately,
I kept them busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the
'W'.'
