WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Clay Dalrymple blocked the plate, saving a run!

Jim Wynn had 6 hits and 5 RBI as the Houston Astros rallied impressively to
win in dramatic style over Philadelphia Phillies, 12 to 11.

Houston scored the winning runs in the 9th inning when they tallied 4 runs on
6 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Wynn who made the home-town
crowd a happy bunch when he doubled scoring two baserunners. Houston
provided plenty of action in the 9th inning when they had 4 runs on 6 hits.
This was the kind of game that many fans love as the lead changed hands 7
times.

Don Lee(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing 1 run in 2/3 of an inning. Ray
Culp(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. He got hit pretty hard, allowing
10 hits and 4 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings.

Detroit Tiger News: May 16,1966

The Trading Card Database - 1964 Jay Publishing Detroit Tigers ...May 16, 1966

The Detroit Tigers announced today that their manager, Chuck Dressen, has suffered a heart attack and is currently hospitalized in Detroit in 'fair condition'. It is Dressen's 2nd heart attack in 2 yrs. Third base Coach Bob Swift has been named as the interim manager. The Tigers have an off day today before starting a 2 game series here at home against the 1st place New York Yankees.

1966 AL Standings

May 16, 1966

Half-way through the month of May finds the surprising New York Yankees in 1st place in the AL. 6 teams are bunched up at the top of the league at this early stage of the season. Really not expected to contend for the title this year, the Yankees have been powered by the hitting of Joe Pepitone and Mickey Mantle and the pitching of Bob Friend and Mel Stottlemyre. The Kansas City Athletics are an even bigger surprise than the Yankees. Their pitching has led the way to their record as have the staffs of the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins. The Baltimore Orioles are being led by Frank Robinson and Boog Powell. Cleveland's anemic hitting has caused them to get off to a very poor start. My Detroit Tigers just went through a 6 game losing streak but took the last 2 games from Chicago and moved into 3rd place, only 1 GB front running NY. The Tigers have pitched better than I expected and lead the AL in runs scored, so I'm hoping for a good pennant race this season.

1966 AL Game: Chi. at Det.

Dick Tracewski Autographed Detroit Tigers 8x10 PhotoMay 14, 1966

It took extra innings, 11 in fact, but the Detroit Tigers finally put an end to their 6 game losing streak by defeating the Chicago White Sox 6-5 at Tiger stadium today. Bill Freehan led off the bottom of the 11th for the Tigers with a base hit. The next batter Dick Tracewski (pictured), tried to bunt Freehan over to 2nd but fouled off the first two pitches. With a 1-2 count on him, Tracewski swung away and doubled down the rightfield line. Freehan tried to score from 1st on the hit and slid in under the tag on a close play at the plate. Detroit will try to gain more ground on the 1st place White Sox in tomorrow's final game of this 3 game series.

Mickey Mantle hit for the cycle and had 4 RBI at Metropolitan Stadium as the
New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 6 to 5.

Mantle had a big evening at the plate. He doubled bringing home two
baserunners in the 1st inning, lined a base-hit scoring a run in the 3rd
inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the 5th inning and tripled in the
7th inning. Minnesota made it exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to
push the needed runs across.

Fritz Peterson(3-1) got the win allowing 3 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings. Hal
Reniff earned the save, his 3rd. The loss was charged to Camilo
Pascual(2-3). He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 6 runs in 5
innings.

'I was a little good, a little bad and a little ugly.' said Peterson, 'I was
just giving us a chance to win.'

Gaylord Perry and the San Francisco Giants put an end to the Pittsburgh Pirates 11 game winning streak with a hard fought 1-0 victory tonight. Perry pitched a brilliant game for SF allowing 5 hits, no walks and striking out 8 in getting the complete game shutout win. The Giants got on the scoreboard in the 6th inning on Willie Mays' run RBI single and that was all hard luck losing pitcher Don Schwall would allow.

threatened in the 9th but San Francisco was able to put down the rally.

Don Schwall(1-1) was the losing pitcher. He allowed just 1 run and 5 hits in
8 innings. Harry Walker lamented, 'Perry was really aggressive tonight. He
kept coming after our hitters. Heck, why not. he kept sitting our guys down
one after another - like so many bowling pins!'

The Detroit Tigers traveled to Cleveland hoping to put an end to their 4 game losing streak. Against great expectations for this season, the Indians have gotten off to a horrible 6-13 start and are having a very hard time scoring runs. The starting pitchers for tonight's game,  Mickey Lolich for Detroit and Gary Bell for Cleveland, were both at the top of their game and neither team was able to score through the 1st 10 innings. Al Kaline broke the deadlock in the top of the 11th inning for the Tigers when he hit a 2 run blast. Larry Sherry came on in the bottom of the 11th to close out the game for Detroit. After getting the first two outs, Duke Simms got to 2nd on a 2 base throwing error by Sherry. The next batter, pinch hitter Tony Martinez, hit a run scoring single making the score 2-1. Cleveland manager Birdie Tebbetts then sent up Rocky Colavito to hit for Davalillo and The Rock promptly hit a 2 run game winning homer that sent the hometown fans into a wild celebration. The Tiger players walked dejectedly off the field with their 5th loss in a row.

1966 AL Game: Det. at Chi.

Tommy John Photos - 1968/May 7, 1966

Chicago White Sox pitcher Tommy John threw a 1-hit gem today, resulting in a 1-0 shutout victory against the Detroit Tigers. John walked none and struck out 2, allowing only a 5th inning single to Norm Cash. Tiger hurler Joe Sparma pitched his finest game of the season but it wasn't enough for Detroit who have now lost 3 in a row. The White Sox scored the lone run of the game in the 1st inning. Tommy Agee led off the game for Chicago with a triple and scored on a single to left by Floyd Robinson. The Tiger loss has created a 3 way tie at the top of the AL standings with Baltimore, New York, and Detroit. The Minnesota Twins are only 1/2 game back.

1966 NL Game: Chi. at NY

ernie banksMay 7, 1966

In honor of Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, who passed away yesterday, I decided to 'play two' and manage the Chicago Cubs. Well, the 1st game turned out to be the longest one played this season lasting 17 innings. The Cubs won the game 8-6 on a 2 run double from Ron Santo and Ernie did play a key role in the game. He's gotten off to a slow start in '66 but did hit a HR in the game and threw out a runner at the plate in the 7th inning.
