In honor of Mr. Cub, Ernie Banks, who passed away yesterday, I decided to 'play two' and manage the Chicago Cubs. Well, the 1st game turned out to be the longest one played this season lasting 17 innings. The Cubs won the game 8-6 on a 2 run double from Ron Santo and Ernie did play a key role in the game. He's gotten off to a slow start in '66 but did hit a HR in the game and threw out a runner at the plate in the 7th inning.

WEB GEMS- Top 3rd: Jerry Grote blocked the plate, saving a run!
Left fielder Billy Williams had 4 hits as the Chicago Cubs defeated the New
York Mets in 17 innings by a score of 8 to 6 at Shea Stadium.
The game was deadlocked at 6 after nine full innings. Chicago was victorious
in the 17th inning. After an out was recorded, Adolfo Phillips started the
attack as he lined a base-hit. One out later, Williams stepped in and he
ripped a single. Ron Santo then doubled scoring Phillips and Williams. The
next batter struck out. Chicago had 15 hits for the afternoon.
Billy Hoeft(2-0) got the win allowing no runs in 3 innings. Ken Holtzman
recorded his 1st save. Dave Eilers(0-2) was the losing pitcher in relief.
He gave up 3 hits and no walks in 2 innings.
