Opening Day in New York

April 12, 1966

The Detroit Tigers started the 1966 season on the road in New York. The bats were ready for opening day and both starting pitchers were gone by the start of the 3rd inning. The Tigers banged out 14 hits while the Yankees had 9 in the game. Detroit scored 3 runs in the 9th and held on for a 9-6 win.

The Detroit Tigers bested the New York Yankees by a 9 to 6 score at Yankee
Stadium.
 
Detroit had the winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs on 4
base hits.  After an out was recorded, Al Kaline was the sparkplug when he
singled.  Willie Horton was next and he tripled.  One out later, Bill Freehan
stepped up to the plate and he doubled.  Dick McAuliffe followed next and he
was walked intentionally.  Mickey Stanley stepped into the box and banged out
a single.  Detroit ended up with 14 hits for the game while New York had 9.
 
Fred Gladding(1-0) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 1 inning. Hank
Aguirre recorded the save, his 1st.  Pedro Ramos(0-1) suffered the loss in
relief.  He allowed 3 runs and 4 hits in 2/3 of an inning.
