In one of the best pitching duels so far in this 1966 season, Los Angeles maestro Sandy Koufax out-pitched St. Louis's Bob Gibson 2-1 in 10 innings tonight. Koufax struck out 11 as the Dodgers handed Gibson his first loss of the season.

Sandy Koufax struck out 11 batters at Dodger Stadium as the Los Angeles
Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings 2 to 1.
Both teams had scored 1 runs after nine full innings. Los Angeles came out on
top in the 10th inning. John Kennedy drew a walk. Koufax next to the plate
and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Willie Davis then was walked
intentionally. Wes Parker followed next and he drew a walk to load the
bases. Ron Fairly stepped into the box and slapped a one-base hit giving Los
Angeles the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. The teams had
been locked in a scoreless duel until the 6th inning.
Koufax(3-1) finished the game allowing 1 run in the victory. Bob Gibson(2-1)
took the loss. The Los Angeles fans were thrilled by the performance put
forth by Koufax, but it was clearly his strikeouts that they enjoyed most.
'When he reached 10 strikeouts the fans showed him their appreciation with a
loud cheer.' Walter Alston said following the game.
