1966 AL Game Stories: May 13, 1966

The Detroit Tigers' losing streak has reached 6 games after tonight's 3-2 extra inning loss to the 1st place Chicago White Sox. The Tigers are 0-4 against the Sox so far this season and have dropped to 6th in the AL Standings. Some interesting stories from the days slate of games in the AL: The Cleveland Indians got their bats going while beating Baltimore 10-3. The Indians Max Alvis hit 2 HR and had 6 RBI in the game. The Orioles Frank Robinson hit his league leading 14th HR in the loss. California's Dean Chance threw a 2 hit shutout against the Boston Red Sox, and Minnesota's Jim Kaat threw a 1 hit shutout vs. the Washington Senators. Kaat lost his no-hitter in the 9th inning.

Max Alvis ripped 2 homeruns and had 6 RBI and Sam McDowell allowed Birdie
Tebbetts to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game at Municipal Stadium
where the Cleveland Indians beat the Baltimore Orioles 10 to 3.
 
Alvis had a great evening at the plate.  He had the crowd cheering his every
move.  He smacked a three-run homer in the 1st inning, hit a single in the
3rd inning and clubbed a three-run home run in the 4th inning.  Cleveland had
a total of 12 hits for the game.  
 
The win was credited to McDowell(3-4) who went the whole way allowing 3 runs.
Jim Palmer(3-1) was the loser.  His ERA increased from 3.82 to 5.40 as he
allowed 9 runs in 3 innings.  
 
'Everything seemed to click tonight,' Alvis said 'if it could only be this
easy all the time!'
 
BOSTON AT CALIFORNIA

Dean Chance threw a 2 hit shutout at Anaheim Stadium where the California
Angels beat the Boston Red Sox by the score of 3 to 0.
 
Chance(3-4) escaped virtually unscathed against the Boston hitters.  He
allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings.  Chance mowed down 11 Boston
batters reducing his ERA from 3.02 to 2.59.  California had 8 hits for the
night.  
 
The loss was charged to Jerry Stephenson(1-3).  He surrendered 5 hits and 5
walks in 6 innings.  When asked about his strikeout total for the game,
Chance offered, 'The fan's really got into it.  It is fun to see them tally
up the strikeout totals up there in the stands.  Fortunately, I kept them
busy tonight - of course, it would be all for naught without the 'W'.'
 
NEW YORK AT KANSAS CITY

Dick Green cracked a homer and had 2 RBI as the Kansas City Athletics came
back to win one over New York Yankees, 10 to 9.
 
Kansas City erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning scoring 2
runs using 3 hits.  After an out was recorded, Green got things rolling when
he doubled.  Larry Stahl was next and he doubled.  Phil Roof got his chance
to keep things going, but he went down on strikes.  Ron Stone was up next and
he was walked intentionally.  Bert Campaneris stepped into the box and ripped
a single to load the bases.  Jose Tartabull kept things alive and drew a
walk.  This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the
lead kept changing - 5 times in all.  
 
Lew Krausse(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 3 runs. Hal Reniff(1-1) was the losing pitcher in relief.  
 
Kansas City remained hot, improving their record to 15-9.  They now have a
record of 8-2 in recent days.  With this loss, New York has a 7-3 record of
late, 15-10 overall.
 
WASHINGTON AT MINNESOTA

Jim Kaat didn't allow a hit until the 9th inning and Tony Oliva rocketed 2
homeruns and scored 3 times as the Minnesota Twins topped the Washington
Senators by a score of 4 to 0 at Metropolitan Stadium.
 
Oliva provided much of the offense.  He smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly' in the
1st inning, lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 4th inning and lined a
base-hit in the 6th inning.  Minnesota banged out 8 hits on the night.
 
Kaat(2-3) went the distance for the shutout.  The left-handed Kaat lost a
no-hitter when Ron Kline singled with nobody out in the 9th inning.  Jim
Duckworth(0-3) was given the loss.  He was touched for 3 homeruns in his 5
innings of work.  
 
'Kaat took our guys to school' Gil Hodges said. 'Too bad he doesn't pitch for
us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'

Joe Horlen went 10 strong innings as the Chicago White Sox outscored the
ice-cold Detroit Tigers in 10 innings 3 to 2.
 
The score was knotted at 2 after nine innings.  Chicago came out the victor in
the 10th inning.  Tommie Agee delivered a base-hit.  Two outs later Tommy
McCraw came to bat and doubled.  Chicago banged out 9 hits on the night.
 
The victory went to Horlen(5-1) who went the distance allowing 2 runs. Denny
McLain(2-4) ended up with the loss.  'When Horlen is on like that it is a
tough game to play, no doubt about it,' Chuck Dressen said. 'He always
pitches well against us.'
